What is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells. Medical providers may describe a concussion as a “mild” brain injury because concussions are usually not life-threatening. Even so, the effects of a concussion can be serious.

Concussions can happen in any sport or setting from impacts large or small. The amount of signs and symptoms do not always correlate with the intensity of the impact, as even the smallest injury can be problematic. Fortunately, the brain can heal after a concussion, just like any other injury. However, because it is difficult to tell the severity of a concussion, any jolt, bump, or blow to the head or body must be taken seriously and followed up with the appropriate healthcare professionals.

What should I look for if I suspect a concussion?

If the individual exhibits any of the following signs, symptoms, or behaviors secondary to an injury, he/she must be removed from all physical activity, as continued activity can exacerbate the condition leading to risk of further injury.

Here are some common signs and symptoms of a concussion:

Headache Neck pain
Dizziness Forgetfulness
Nausea Balance difficulty
Confusion Irritability
Fogginess Problems sleeping

What can you do about a concussion?

Concussions can be complex. But getting care doesn’t have to be.

Most concussions only have temporary effects on the brain with signs and symptoms that last for a brief time. In fact, 80% of individuals recover within 3 weeks. However, many can have lasting and substantial symptoms.

First and foremost, seek medical attention from a hospital or your primary care provider if you suspect a concussion has happened. If symptoms do not resolve with rest, physical therapy can help with treatment.
